Making Equine Ultrasound Safe and Affordable For Breeders

Before you start working with your mares, you may want to take a few minutes to program in all of their names and some kind of ID number for each. (The system requires that you include an ID number of some kind if you are going to save a name as well. If you don’t have ID numbers for your mares, just make up a list and give each a number.)

The only reason to display a mare’s name at the bottom of the screen of course is if you are saving your images. But if you are, the two-step-save process (covered further on) only works if you have pulled up the mare’s name at the bottom of the screen. The save process will save the file according to that name and according to the date.

Putting your mares into the system

The following steps cover how to enter a mare into your ultrasound.

  1. Press “PAT DATA” (just to the right of your space bar). A menu will come up.
  2. You will already be highlighting the word “New” at the top right of the menu, so press “Enter” to create a new mare record. The cursor will drop down to the name field.
  3. Type in the name of the mare. (I think you can only use letters here and no punctuation.) Once finished, press “Enter” to drop down to the next field.
  4. Type in some kind of ID number for the mare and press “Enter” again.
  5. In the subsequent fields you can put in the mare’s age and weight, but you can leave the LMP values empty. Hit “Enter” to advance field to field, or use the scroll ball.
  6. Once finished, highlight the word “Set” at the bottom left and press “Enter” to save and exit.

Repeat this for each of your mares.

Pulling up a mare you have already put into the system

Once you have saved a mare in the system, you can then pull her back up without having to type in her info again. It’s very simple.

  1. Press “PAT DATA” (just to the right of your space bar). A menu will come up.
  2. You will already be highlighting the word “New” at the top right of the menu, but what you want to do is scroll the trackball UP just a little bit, to highlight the word “Query” instead. With “Query” selected, press “Enter.”
  3. If you have fewer than a dozen mares, you probably see all of them listed here. If you have more than this entered into the system, you can use the Name or ID fields to search for the mare you are looking for. Once you see the mare’s name, scroll down to it, and with it selected, press “Enter” to pull it up into the main menu, and then press “Enter” again (you will already be highlighting the word “Set” at bottom left) to exit. You should see the mare listed at the bottom of the screen now, near your exam type.

Whenever you begin to do an ultrasound exam, take a second to pull up the mare you are working with, so that her name is listed at the bottom of the screen. Your saved images will then save properly.
