Making Equine Ultrasound Safe and Affordable For Breeders

You will have two primary measurements you will be making: distance measurements and area measurements. They’re both quite easy.

Distance Measurements

  1. With a frozen image on the screen, press the DIS button to go into distance mode.
  2. Use your trackball to position the cursor on the screen where you want to begin measuring. Press “Enter” to start the line.
  3. Use the trackball to move the cursor to the point you want to measure to (for example, the other side of the follicle) and press DIS again. (Note: On some systems you press “Dis” to complete the line, and on others you press “Enter” to complete the line. You will need to try it out on your system to see which yours is set up for.)
  4. If you wish to make a second measurement, repeat those same steps, or when you’re finished making measurements, press “ESC” to escape out of distance mode.

Note: If you make a mistake, hit the “CLEAR” button (up on the left side of the keyboard) to erase your measurements. Then press “DIS” again to start over.

Area Measurements

  1. With a frozen image on the screen, press the AREA button to go into area mode.
  2. Use your trackball to position the cursor on the screen where you want to begin measuring. Press “Enter” to start the line.
  3. Use the trackball to trace around what you want to measure (for example, a follicle, embryo, or cyst) and press AREA again to calculate the area measurement. (Note: again, depending on your system, you may need to press “Enter” again to close the circle, or you might need to press “Area” to close the circle. Try it both ways to find out.) You should now see the measurement displayed on the screen.
  4. If you wish to make a second area measurement, repeat those same steps, or when you’re finished making measurements, press “ESC” to escape out of area mode.

Note: If you make a mistake (and it’s easy with your first few of these — so practice!), hit the “CLEAR” button (left side of the keyboard) to erase your measurements. Then press “AREA” again to start over.

NOTE: The ultrasound also performs calculations of gestation periods, estimated dates of delivery, etc., if you press the button marked “OB” button. These calculations are covered in your operator’s manual. I’ll be creating additional pages here soon outlining (and simplifying) how the OB functions work.
